Catching Your Breath in Midlife: Counselling and the Menopause

When we talk about the menopause and perimenopause, the conversation usually starts with the physical symptoms, for example the sudden hot flushes, the sleepless nights, joint pain, fatigue and the erratic cycles. But if you are walking through this transition right now, you know that the emotional and psychological shifts can feel even more overwhelming.

Suddenly finding yourself hit by spikes of anxiety, uncharacteristic low mood, brain fog, memory challenges, imposter syndrome or a creeping sense of losing your identity are all incredibly common. Yet so many women suffer in silence, not feeling seen or heard and feeling exhausted from trying to "be strong" and keep everything together while running completely on empty.

If you are going through this overwhelming phase of life, you don't have to carry the weight alone. Counselling offers space to reclaim your balance, clarity, and self-compassion.

Menopause and Counselling: The Research

For a long time, the menopause was treated as a ‘medical problem’. However, the UK healthcare community are now recognising the vital role of psychological support. In updated guidance published on 7 November 2024, the UK National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommended menopause-specific CBT as a management option for menopause in people aged 40 years and over in addition to hormone replacement therapy (HRT), or as an alternative for those who prefer not to take HRT or if it is contraindicated.

The recommendation follows evidence that showed CBT led to improved sleep, as well as beneficial outcomes in frequency and severity of vasomotor symptoms, with the greatest effect seen in the reduction of “distress or bother” associated with the symptoms.

Clinical research shows that:

  • It eases physical and emotional distress:Therapy significantly reduces how much physical symptoms like hot flushes and sleep disruption affect your daily life and mood.
  • It targets anxiety and low mood:Specific therapeutic approaches give you practical tools to manage the emotional rollercoaster and break the cycle of stress.
  • It supports your choices:Whether you are taking HRT or looking for an alternative path because hormone treatments aren't right for you, therapy provides a proven, effective pillar of support.

Navigating the "Midlife Perfect Storm"

Menopause rarely happens in a vacuum. It often arrives at a time when life is already demanding a great deal from you. You might be:

  • Navigating shifts in your identity or low self-esteem as your body changes.
  • Facing the emotional transition of an "empty nest" as children leave home.
  • Juggling a demanding career while stepping into a caregiving role for ageing parents.
  • Questioning your broader purpose and wondering, “Who am I in this next chapter?”

These aren't just biological symptoms; they are major transitions in our life. You deserve a dedicated space to process them.

How We Can Work Together

Because your experience of the menopause is unique to you, so is your therapy. In my practice, I work integratively, using different therapeutic approaches to meet you exactly where you are, always working safely and at a pace that feels comfortable for you. Together, we can look at what you need most:

  • A safe space to be heard: Through person-centred therapy, I provide a confidential, completely non-judgemental space where you can let your guard down and feel truly seen.
  • Practical tools for daily life: Together, we can look at the patterns between your thoughts, feelings, and physical responses, giving you practical ways to quieten anxiety.
  • Reconnecting with yourself: We can explore how the changes in your life are impacting you today, helping you gently process shifts in your identity and rediscover who you are.

As a trauma informed counsellor, my passion is creating a supportive environment where you can gently let go of the burdens you’ve been carrying and build your resilience for the future.
